STORYLINE:
In the early days of Russia’s full-scale war, 25-year-old Stanislav Tarnavskyi promised Tetiana Baieva that when he returned from the frontline, he would marry her.
But that promise would take more than three years to fulfil.
In April 2022, he was captured along with hundreds of other marines in the besieged city of Mariupol.
After more than 1,000 days in captivity, he finally kept his word and proposed to Baieva — who had waited for him all that time.
They met in Berdiansk, now occupied by Russia, in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.
By the time Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022, they had been together for nearly a year.
Their bond was strong — and it was that connection that helped Tarnavskyi endure Russian captivity.
He often imagined the children they might one day have, and what their life together could be.
For her, these three years were no less difficult or painful. With no guarantee he would return, she still waited.
To keep her mind occupied — especially after being forced to flee her native Berdiansk due to Russian occupation and settle in a new place — she tried to fill her life with as many activities as possible, so she wouldn’t have time to dwell on him — because every thought of him brought tears.
