“I’m Caroline Zimbalist and I’m an artist and designer.”

“I primarily work with biomaterials, specifically a bioplastic. So I’m using a variety of ingredients depending on exactly what I’m creating. So if it’s a hard, rigid sculpture, I’m using agar powder, a seaweed derivative called carrageenan, which is a form of seaweed but it almost is like broken into three categories, so this is the most gelatinous seaweed. And then I’m using tapioca starch, vegetable glycerine and water.”

“This whole term of bioplastic, it’s almost very misleading because people think I’m reworking used plastic, and there’s zero plastic in my work.”

“If we are able to, again, glamorize almost a drab textile or really quite bring a like a new, fresh artistic feel to a boring textile, and have celebrities wear it out and expose, it brings attention to the material. It brings attention to the larger conversation. And I really think that’s the way that these materials will get into mainstream fashion.”

“I think we’re at a point right now in the fashion industry where synthetic fibres are the norm. About 60% of our clothes today are made from synthetic fibres. Part of the reasoning is because these fibres are so cheap. Plastic is a pretty cheap good and so it’s easy for the fashion industry to make clothes out of products derived from plastic. That being said, we’re seeing a growth in consumer demand for more sustainable fashion options.”
