7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mustapha Benramel, environment researcher, President Minaretes Ecological Association:
"The decline in water levels in the oases is mainly due to three key reasons, first, the significant decrease in rainfall as a result of climate change, second, the overexploitation of water resources due to the intensive use of these oases for ecotourism activities and agriculture, third, the shift toward cultivating crops that consume large amounts of water, such as watermelon, which has further worsened the situation."

"To irrigate the oases, we dig wells, but we have noticed that the water level in these wells drops year after year. As a result, we are forced to dig deeper to access water. The solution we have adopted to cope with water scarcity is the use of drip irrigation, which allows us to save water and use it more efficiently."
