"I believe that there is a commitment from the American President (Donald Trump) that he is prepared to make Patriot available. Discussions will now be held on the modalities of the winding up, that is, how many systems there are, who will take them over and how they will be financed, if to be honest, and I should not anticipate, Ukraine can make very good use of every system and it is therefore important that possibilities are subsequently found to wind it up financially. This is, I think, more a coverage of individual states and not via the EU."

6. SOUNDBITE (German) Stefan Kornelius, German government spokesperson:
"If you recall the Genesys, two were originally also requested by the Federal Chancellor in the telephone conversation, and the Federal Chancellor spoke to the American President again on Friday and in the course of these talks, which lasted more than a week, the number increased. According to the Americans, we have more than two systems and, as you rightly say, Ukraine’s needs are higher."

10. SOUNDBITE (German) Stefan Kornelius, German government spokesperson:
"The German government has offered to finance two systems. And as far as the financing of other systems is concerned, insofar as they are made available, we now have to wait for these talks, we have to wait for the willingness of the European states, whether they are members of NATO or not. The circle is relatively congruent."

STORYLINE:
Germany has offered to finance two new Patriot systems for Ukraine and is awaiting official talks on the possibility of more, government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said Monday in Berlin.
The announcement came as German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius was traveling to Washington on Monday to meet with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Germany has already given three of its own Patriot systems to Ukraine, and Pistorius was quoted as saying in an interview with the Financial Times that it now has only six.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the U.S. is sending Ukraine more badly needed Patriot air defense missiles and that the European Union will pay the U.S. for the “various pieces of very sophisticated” weaponry.
While the EU is not allowed under its treaties to buy weapons, EU member countries can and are, just as NATO member countries are buying and sending weapons.
Russia has pounded Ukrainian cities, including the capital, Kyiv, with hundreds of drones and cruise and ballistic missiles that Ukraine’s air defenses are struggling to counter.
June brought the highest monthly civilian casualties of the past three years, with 232 people killed and 1,343 wounded, the U.N. human rights mission in Ukraine said.
Russia launched 10 times more drones and missiles in June than in the same month last year.
