5. SOUNDBITE (Farsi) Esmail Baghaei, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
"The U.S. during a diplomatic process, committed a clear breach of international law. The U.S. is a permanent member of the UN Security Council. The U.S. has a special responsibility towards international peace and security, since it is a member of the UN Security Council. The U.S. is one of the three trustees of NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty). Hence and through any viewpoint, the U.S. act in attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, and prior to that coordination and cooperation with the Zionist regime in aggression against Iran, has been a complete international violation and criminal act, and it should be accountable for the issue."

STORYLINE:
Iran on Monday said that U.S. strikes on the country’s soil last month constituted a “clear breach of international law”.
The U.S. launched a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities on June 22, during Israel’s 12-day bombardment of Tehran’s nuclear and military sites.
“Through any viewpoint, the U.S. act in attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, and prior to that coordination and cooperation with the Zionist regime in aggression against Iran, has been a complete international violation and criminal act, and it should be accountable,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, told reporters in Tehran.
It comes as Iran’s foreign minister said Saturday that his country would accept a resumption of nuclear talks with the U.S. if there were assurances of no more attacks against it, state media reported.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also said in a speech to Tehran-based foreign diplomats that Iran has always been ready and will be ready in the future for talks about its nuclear program.
Following the U.S. and Israeli strikes, Iran suspended cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog, which led to the departure of inspectors.
Israel claims it acted because Tehran was within reach of a nuclear weapon.
U.S. intelligence agencies and the International Atomic Energy Agency had assessed Iran last had an organized nuclear weapons program in 2003, though Tehran had been enriching uranium up to 60% — a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%.
