Myanmar’s military leader attended an annual commemorative event for the first time in five years on Saturday, as the country heads towards a general election the authorities hope will legitimize their seizure of power, but which opponents have denounced as a sham. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing took part in a wreath-laying ceremony in Yangon on the anniversary of the assassination of independence hero Aung San and most of his cabinet, in July 1947.
