"Well, yes, I admit it’s strange (two dead beached whales within days), especially since they are two small animals. But, well, we don’t know if on their migratory route, which is where these animals would be at this moment, (they) have been diverted offshore by some storm out at sea or some illness that weakened them. They ended up going from the sea to the river, further inland, which is not their normal habitat. And that’s where they have died."

STORYLINE:
Another whale has appeared dead on the coast of Buenos Aires, the second one in a few days near the city.

The dead specimen is a young Sei whale, an endangered species that has been seeing a recovery in its population in recent years.

This whale’s appearance follows the sighting of another specimen last Wednesday, a few kilometers north on the Plata river shore.

Researchers are investigating whether this dead whale fell ill and was then dragged to the coast by the current.

Sei whales follow an Atlantic migratory route from the Falkland Islands to the Brazilian coast, according to Laura Prosdocimi, Biologist of the Argentine Museum of Natural Science.

Miguel Iñíguez, head of the Cethus Foundation, which focuses on cetacean research and conservation, said they are investigating the cause of the deaths.

He suspects that the two animals have been diverted offshore "by some storm out at sea or some illness that weakened them."

The Naval Prefecture divers tied ropes to the whale’s tail to tow it away from the shore.

Experts anticipate that the results of the studies on the dead cetaceans will take several days to reach a conclusion.
