1. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Gavriil, no surname given, Moscow resident:
“What is normal about what Trump says? I don’t see anything new here. We shouldn’t attach too much importance to what he says. We need to understand what we need to do, and do it. That’s probably it.”
2. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Andrei Bankayev, Moscow resident:
“This (if Russia and Ukraine don’t conclude a truce) will simply lead to his rating falling, Trump’s (rating). He wants to be a peacemaker. On his command, he blows the whistle – everything stops and blossoms. It’s impossible.”
3. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Vladimir, no surname given, Moscow resident:

“I believe that we have entrusted our country to a knowledgeable person (Russian President Vladimir Putin), and he and his team will figure out what to do with it.”

STORYLINE:
Muscovites reacted calmly to the announcement made by U.S. President Donald Trump Monday, who said he would punish Russia with “biting" tariffs if a peace deal with Ukraine isn’t reached within 50 days.
Trump also said NATO members will purchase “billions and billions” of dollars in U.S. weaponry including Patriot missiles and transfer the munitions to Ukraine.
“I don’t see anything new here. We shouldn’t attach too much importance to what he says,” one Moscow resident said.
If Russia and Ukraine don’t conclude a truce, it will lead to Trump’s rating falling, another one added.
The latest steps reflect an evolving approach from the Republican president, who promised to swiftly resolve the conflict Russian President Vladimir Putin started three years ago.
Trump has often criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for allowing the conflict to happen but more recently has expressed growing irritation toward Putin.
