6. SOUNDBITE (French) Arnaud Rousseau, president of French farmers union FNSEA:
"A year and a half ago we sent a clear message to the whole of Europe that we were facing an agricultural crisis. There was a need to overcome those challenges despite all the difficulties that we are well aware of. But we will not allow this new (budget) proposal to disrespect farmers. And of course, this is done in the middle of the summer, when we are all busy in our fields for the harvest or working the soil. This is too easy (sarcastically). But I can tell you that we will come back, we will come back to Brussels at a moment of our choosing, and there will be thousands of us to say that we refuse to be treated in such a way."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Lode Ceyssens, President of the Belgian farmers union Boerenbond:
"Everybody is talking about security for Europe. Everybody is talking about a stronger Europe. Well let me tell you, you can’t get stronger with an empty stomach! And if Europe is concerned about its future, Europe should be concerned about the future of its farmers. For the future of the farmers we need a strong CAP (Common Agriculture Policy), we need enough budget for the challenges we face."

STORYLINE:
Around 200 farmers from across Europe marched towards the European Commission building in Brussels on Wednesday to demand greater financial support from the bloc, as President Ursula von der Leyen was unveiling the EU’s budget for the next nine years.

Demonstrators marched peacefully and symbolically threw farmers boots into a pile next to the building, as the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034 was being presented.

Delegations urged the European Commission to take farmers complaints into account and to not cut the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget.

Last February violent demonstrations shook Brussels as farmers descended on the Belgian capital with over a thousand tractors, calling for greater financial support and additional measures to help them overcome recurring difficulties.

"A year and a half ago we sent a clear message to the whole of Europe that we were facing an agricultural crisis," Arnaud Rousseau, president of the French farmers union FNSEA told the crowd.

He acknowledged that Wednesday’s demonstration was relatively small as many farmers were busy in their fields.

"But I can tell you that we will come back, we will come back to Brussels at a moment of our choosing, and there will be thousands of us to say that we refuse to be treated in such a way," he said.
