“Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity should be respected. Especially given the current ongoing turbulence in the Middle East, no actions that could further escalate the situation should be taken.”

5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“Fentanyl is a problem of the U.S., not China, and the responsibility fully lies with the U.S. itself. The U.S. has ignored China’s goodwill and insisted on imposing tariffs on China on the grounds of fentanyl issues. The move has dealt a heavy blow to China-U.S. dialogue and cooperation on counter-narcotics and has seriously undermined China’s interests. If the U.S. truly wants to cooperate with China, it should face squarely the objective facts and engage in dialogue with China based on equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Lin Jian, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“China-Russia-India cooperation not only serves the interests of the three countries but also contributes to peace, security, stability, and progress in the region and the wider world. China is willing to maintain communication with Russia and India to advance the China-Russia-India cooperation.”

STORYLINE:
China on Thursday called for Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity to be “respected” after Israel struck the Syrian defense ministry in Damascus as it intervened in the clashes between the government forces and Druze militias in southern Syria.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, says at least 374 combatants and civilians were killed in the clashes and Israeli strikes, among them dozens of civilians killed in the crossfire or in targeted attacks against the minority group.
Israel, which has periodically intervened or threatened to intervene in support of the Druze in Syria, launched dozens of strikes on convoys of government forces in southern Syria and on government facilities in Damascus. It has threatened further escalation.
Clashes have on several occasions broken out between forces loyal to the government and Druze fighters since the fall of President Bashar Assad in early December in a lightning rebel offensive led by Sunni Islamist insurgent groups, but this week’s fighting has escalated to new levels of violence.
Separately, Lin once again urged the U.S. to engage in dialogue based on “equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit” with China if it wanted to solve the fentanyl issue.
This follows reports that President Donald Trump said he believed China might soon sentence to death those involved in manufacturing and smuggling fentanyl.
Without confirming the report, Lin accused the U.S. again of imposing tariffs under the pretext of the fentanyl issue, which “dealt a heavy blow” to the China-U.S. anti-narcotics cooperation.
Asked about the progress of negotiation on a Russia-India-China (RIC) cooperation mechanism that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said is underway, Lin said the trilateral cooperation is conducive to the three parties and the rest of the world.
Rudenko told the media recently that Russia is approaching China and India about resuming work within the framework of the RIC, which he said would depend on China-India relations returning to a level that allows it.
