STORYLINE:
Under Gaza’s scorching summer heat, displaced families are enduring unbearable living conditions.

Sabah al-Dali, a mother of ten, lives with her four sons and 17 grandchildren in three tents.

Her six daughters, also displaced, have taken shelter in overcrowded schools.

At night, stray animals invade their fragile shelter.

With 27 people sharing three tents, privacy, sleep, and basic hygiene are impossible.

“Flies are biting us and the dogs come inside (the tents) and sleep with us at night and the mice. The youngsters have developed allergies,” said al-Dali, who suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure, but no medication is available.

Meanwhile, Subhiya Ramadan, 73 years old, and displaced in the Shati refugee camp, in northern Gaza, said “We were honored in our homes, they brought us here in tents, enter the tent to see, a fire is lit, so I bring the blanket here (outside the tent) and stay under the canopy we made, this is our life."

Ramadan lives in a tent with her son and his wife after their home was bombed and destroyed.

Since Israel launched its offensive in Gaza in Oct. 2023 following the Hamas-led attack, over 90% of Gaza’s population—around 1.9 million people—haS been displaced, according to the UN.

Many were forced to flee multiple times, moving from the north to central and southern Gaza as Israeli evacuation orders expanded.

With shelters overcrowded and basic infrastructure destroyed, tens of thousands of families now live in makeshift tents, often assembled from plastic sheets and scrap metal.

These tents offer no protection from the intense summer heat, which routinely exceeds 30°C (86°F), nor from swarms of insects, stray animals, or the lack of clean water and sanitation.
