STORYLINE:
Mississippi families may lose access to their favorite PBS Kids shows if Congress follows through on President Donald Trump’s request to claw back $1.1 billion for public broadcasting.
Royal Aills, the executive director of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, said the cuts would result in a $2 million loss for MPB, which represents approximately 15% of the organization’s budget.
"That will affect NPR and PBS," Aills said. "I know what PBS means to the home, especially those folks who don’t have cable or satellite, fiber hasn’t come to their home yet, it’s still sitting on the pole down by the road and hasn’t gotten that last mile. They need us."
MPB broadcasts a 24-7 kids channel that streams on digital platforms. MPB’s Chief Content Officer Taiwo Gaynor said they won’t be able to continue that channel if the cuts pass.
