STORYLINE:
Doctors, residents, and administrative staff from Garrahan Hospital, Argentina’s leading pediatric center, protested on Thursday demanding salary increases from President Javier Milei’s government.

The unrest at the Garrahan reflects broader dissatisfaction among healthcare professionals under Milei’s ultraliberal administration, which has prioritized deep public spending cuts to fight inflation.

Garrahan staff have highlighted deteriorating work conditions, pointing to nearly 200 resignations due to low wages that are no longer sufficient to cover basic living costs.

Healthcare workers at the nation’s and region’s premier pediatric hospital have declared that the recent salary increase offered by the Ministry of Health fails to meet the essential needs of healthcare personnel, and they have therefore called a strike, which the government has condemned.

Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has slashed Argentina’s health care budget by 48% in real terms. His administration fired over 2,000 Health Ministry employees, including 1,400 over just a few days in January.
