Why Macron’s announcement to recognize Palestinian statehood puts pressure on Western democracies

France has become the first G7 country and biggest EU member to say it will formally recognize Palestinian statehood. So far, around 140 countries have done so, but most western states have not, saying that Israel and the Palestinians need to come to an agreement first. Now a statement from French President Emmanuel Macron could change that — and put pressure on other leading democracies to follow suit. In a joint appeal, the leaders of Germany, France and the UK have called on Israel to allow unrestricted humanitarian aid into Gaza, warning of a "humanitarian catastrophe."
