“My language is metaphorical. I use children and childhood as actors, to be able to say what I want to say, work by work. A bit like Morandi, who used bottles (Giorgio Morandi, an artist famous for his still life paintings), but didn’t care about the bottles; he was interested in the message. I’m interested in that sense of relatability about childhood that the viewer can have with my children, and from there the message I have to convey begins.”

“Berruti’s works are, in some ways, a game that challenges us greatly. A very serious game. We see it through the carousel, through the video animations. But there’s a peculiarity to this game, which isn’t over. We must decide what color to give these children, what features, what ethnicity, if we want. Precisely to identify ourselves, we can be ourselves, it can be an unknown child from somewhere else in the world, it can even be our parents or grandparents when they were children. It’s a game to understand that childhood represents that moment in life when anything can still happen.”

“The interesting thing about Berruti’s art is that there’s no single answer. In fact, after a tour of this exhibition, you probably come away with many more doubts than before. This is a positive thing, art should do this, it shouldn’t be something that reassures you, that consoles you. Rather, art should challenge you to grow a little. You can give yourself an answer, many answers, or, as in my case, not understand anything and give yourself no answers at all, but try to go beyond it.”

The largest solo exhibition of Valerio Berruti, an Italian artist renowned for his artworks depicting children, is opening in Milan.
The exhibition uses the metaphor of childhood to suggest a more human approach to major current issues.
