STORYLINE:
A humpback whale was found dead on the shore of Rio de Janeiro in the early afternoon on Monday, drawing attention from beachgoers and prompting a response from local authorities.

The carcass was first spotted drifting close to Rio’s west area beaches in the morning and reached São Conrado in the afternoon, carried by ocean currents.

Humpback whales are typically seen along the coast of Rio de Janeiro between June and November, with peak sightings usually from July to September.

Around 25,000 humpback whales make a 2,500-mile (4,000-kilometer) journey from feeding areas in Antarctica to northeast Brazil.

Most concentrate in the Abrolhos region, an area of coral reefs off the coast of Bahia and Espirito Santo states known for featuring the greatest marine biodiversity in the South Atlantic.
