STORYLINE:
Vietnam’s capital city Hanoi was quiet Tuesday morning as the country’s north braces for tropical storm Wipha.
The storm made landfall at 10 a.m. local time in the coastal area of Hung Yen and Ninh Binh provinces, packing winds up to 88 kilometers per hour (about 55 mph) and bringing heavy rain, the national weather agency reported.
Coastal provinces were placed on emergency alert and airlines canceled flights ahead of the storm.
The storm is forecast to bring powerful winds and heavy rainfall, raising the risk of flash floods and landslides in northern Vietnam’s mountainous areas and flooding in urban centers, including Hanoi.
Emergency warnings have been sent to millions of residents by text message.
In Hanoi, buildings reinforces glass doors with sand bags and wooden planks as people are advised to refrain from leaving home unnecessarily.
