1. SOUNDBITE (English) Molly Quell, Associated Press:
"So the United Nations’ highest court, the International Court of Justice, gave an advisory opinion on climate change. The court’s 15 judges unanimously found that the right to a livable planet is a human right and that all countries are obliged to ensure that there is a healthy and safe environment. The court also concluded that countries who do not meet this obligation could be in violation of international law. Paving the way for proceedings to be brought, both here at the ICJ and in other domestic proceedings. The judges also found that countries who have suffered the effects of climate change, countries like Vanuatu, who spearheaded the initiative to bring the advisory opinion to the court, could be entitled to reparations from high-emitting states, like the United States and Russia, to compensate for the damage that they have experienced. STORYLINE:
The United Nations’ top court has issued a landmark advisory opinion on climate change.
The International Court of Justice’s 15-black-robed judges considered for the first time what the court’s president calls “an existential problem of planetary proportions that imperils all forms of life and the very health of our planet.”
In its ruling delivered Wednesday, the court said everyone is entitled to a habitable planet, and that failure to address climate change could be a violation of international law.
The unanimous non-binding opinion has been hailed by activists as a turning point in international climate law.
