STORYLINE:
Former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined former U.S. ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel on Capitol Hill Wednesday for hearing on countering China’s economic coercion on democracies.
Morrison previously linked human rights violations in China with security in the Indo-Pacific when he spoke at an Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China conference in Tokyo in 2023.
Morrison urged the Australian government, now led by Anthony Albanese of the rival Labor party, to consider sanctions against Chinese officials for human rights abuses against Uyghurs in China’s Xinjiang autonomous region while also working on broader security issues.
