STORYLINE:
Palestinian National Initiative political party General Secretary Mustafa Barghouti said the "world is falling short" when it comes to the war-torn Gaza Strip.
"Three war crimes are taking place simultaneously: genocide, ethnic cleansing, and collective punishment, including starvation and a devastating famine," he said on Wednesday at a news conference in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
Desperation is mounting in the Palestinian territory of more than 2 million, which experts say is at risk of famine because of Israel’s blockade and nearly two-year offensive.
Barghouti called on people around the world to join in a general hunger strike on the coming Sunday.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7 attack, and killed around 1,200 people. Fewer than half of the 50 hostages still in Gaza are believed to be alive.
More than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed during the war, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Its count doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says that more than half of the dead are women and children. The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.
Britain threatened Tuesday to take further action against Israel if it does not agree to end the war in Gaza, a day after two dozen mostly European countries condemned Israel’s restrictions on aid shipments into the territory and the killings of hundreds of Palestinians trying to reach food.
Despite the increasingly strong words, many are skeptical that Israel will yield to such pressure without more significant punitive action — and especially without the backing of Germany and the U.S., Israel’s strongest Western allies.
Outrage over Israel’s actions in Gaza has grown in Europe as images of suffering Palestinians have driven protests in London, Berlin, Brussels and other capitals.
