STORYLINE:
Athens residents and tourists crowded beaches on Tuesday as temperatures crept up across the country.

Elsewhere in Greece a major forest fire has broken out, and authorities have ordered several villages near Corinth, west of Athens, to evacuate. There are no immediate reports of casualties. Weather conditions are particularly tough for the 180 firefighters at the scene on Tuesday.

An intense and prolonged heatwave has been forecasted in upcoming days with temperatures expected to reach up to 44 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country, according to the National Observatory of Athens.

Authorities are urging residents and tourists to avoid outdoor activity during peak heat hours, stay hydrated and watch for signs of heat-related illness as temperatures reach extreme levels.
