“She went to work as usual. She was assigned an area close to the cathedral. Whilst she was working her supervisor passed by and asked her how she was feeling. Montse told her that she was feeling very bad. That she had back pain, her arms hurt a lot, and she felt pain in her hands. And that she wasn’t able to collect the rubbish. And also that she felt a lot of pain in her chest.”

“The day my sister-in-law died, the (maximum) temperature was an average of 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit) . For three days she had been complaining that working was unbearable, that she couldn’t cope with the heat. It was too much.”

“At present we have an accumulated excess of deaths related to high temperatures of 1,211 people. That’s the excess in mortality. So far in July we are doubling the excess of the whole of June. This is always among vulnerable groups. People older than 65 years-old or more. Mainly those older than 85. There are different distributions among the regions in Spain. But we are seeing an increase compared to last year.”

STORYLINE:
The cruel heat is back as Southern Europe slips deep into summer.
In homes and offices, air conditioning is sweet relief. Under the scorching sun, however, manual labor can be grueling, brutal, even occasionally deadly.
A street sweeper died in Barcelona during a heat wave last month and, according to a labour union, 12 other city cleaners have suffered heatstroke since then.
Some of Europe’s powerful labor unions are pushing for tougher regulations to protect the aging workforce from climate change on the world’s fastest-warming continent.
For now, laborers in some of the Mediterranean’s top tourist destinations are struggling to cope with more frequent heat waves.
Aguilar’s relatives joined the protest of about 400 people by the CGT union.
