“Yes, I think expectations were low already, but also in the run-up to the summit we’ve not really seen any area which suggests a breakthrough. There are a number of contentious issues. It is still possible to make progress, but it can’t really be expected that this will be a great change in direction, something which really substantively moves the relationship onward.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Fabian Zuleeg, European Policy Centre, Chief Executive and Chief Economist:
“Yes, of course, China has a lot of power, not only because of resources of minerals, but also because it is a very important economic partner for the European Union. But the opposite is also true. The European Union is very important for Chinese industry. It is a big market for Chinese product, which is especially important at a time when the American market is not as accessible as it was before. So both sides have interests here. Both sides have something to give. So in theory, at least, some form of deal is possible.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Fabian Zuleeg, European Policy Centre, Chief Executive and Chief Economist:
“What happens between America and China will also impact on the European Union. If China cannot export as much of its production to the US, it will have to send it to different markets and Europe is one of the key markets for China when it comes to that. So these are all interrelated, they are also politically interrelated. Europe is being very careful not to antagonize President Trump even further by looking maybe too close to China, so all of that doesn’t make this summit easier. It will be very hard to achieve something concrete.”

STORYLINE:
The Chief Economist for the European Policy Centre, Fabian Zuleeg said expectations are low for a major deal between the European Union and China.
The two economic heavyweights meet together in Beijing for the EU-China summit on July 24.
António Costa, President of the European Council and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen will meet Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss EU-China relations and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
They will also have meetings with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, to cover in more detail the trade and economic aspects of the relationship.
"There are a number of contentious issues. It is still possible to make progress, but it can’t really be expected that this will be a great change in direction, something which really substantively moves the relationship onward," Zuleeg said.
“What happens between America and China will also impact on the European Union."
"Europe is being very careful not to antagonize President Trump even further by looking maybe too close to China, so all of that doesn’t make this summit easier. It will be very hard to achieve something concrete," he added.
