STORYLINE:
Argentine pensioners took to the streets of Buenos Aires on Wednesday as they demonstrated against President Javier Milei’s anticipated veto of a pension reform bill.

Congress passed a bill on July 11 that provides a 7.2% increase to pensions and an improved bonus.

Milei has consistently opposed the measure and has stated he will veto any legislation threatening his "zero deficit" policy.

The administration argues the pension increase would impose an unsustainable fiscal burden, estimated at 1.8% of GDP.

Milei, whose government prioritizes spending cuts for economic stabilization, has until August 4 to act on the legislation.

The protest, like past demonstrations, showed concerns from pensioners whose incomes have declined due to economic and inflationary pressures.

Healthcare deregulation has also increased costs.

While inflation has slowed, the buying power of minimum pensions remains low.

If Milei vetoes the law, the opposition could attempt to overturn it in Congress, requiring a two-thirds majority in both chambers.
