4. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Yaroslav Telenko, protester:
"The problem of corruption is directly related to all other problems, including war. In my opinion, corruption leads to murders, it leads to failures on the front, so we must eradicate corruption at the legislative level. An attack on the anti-corruption system of the NABU (National Anti-Corruption Bureau) and SAPO (Specialized Anti-corruption Prosecution) bodies is an attack on me personally, an attack on my friends who serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, so for me this is a red line, for me this is unacceptable. It seems to me that narratives about the disintegration of the country, narratives about people here rocking the boat, are absurd. Because it is the government that is rocking the boat."

6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Yaroslav Telenko, protester:
"This is the result of calls from the European Commission, from our Western partners, who in turn are watching the situation in Ukraine and are inspired by our actions. Therefore, this is not a direct influence, but still an influence. It seems to me that these actions should be continued until we see that this law is completely abolished and the independence of anti-corruption bodies is fully restored."

8. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Yaroslav Horanskyi, Ukrainian war veteran and protester:
"Corruption is very dangerous at any time. And if you look at it this way, then corruption has led us to some extent to the fact that we are now at war. If there is corruption, we will not have weapons, we will not have money to support our military, treat our military, provide prosthetics, and so on. I think it is very strange that at this time we have to stand against corruption, and not stand together with ministers, deputies, and so on against the aggressor."

11. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Kateryna Danylevych, protester:
"War does not block democracy. That is, if we silently accept everything that the government accepts, democracy can turn into an autocracy. It is already taking on these features. In fact, the fact that there is a ban on protests now does not mean that people do not want a European future. We want democracy, we are a European democratic state."

STORYLINE:
Ukrainians took to the streets for a second day to protest a new law they say weakens Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdogs.
The legislation, which has also drawn rebukes from European Union officials and international rights groups, has put increased pressure on President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and endangered his public support at a critical phase of the war.
Discontent over the law led to the first major demonstration against the government in more than three years of war, marking the most serious fracture yet in the national unity that has helped Ukraine resist Russia’s invasion.
In Kyiv, thousands of people gathered near the Ukrainian Presidential Office to protest against the law.
