STORYLINE:
Faiza once dreamed of studying medicine. Instead, she has enrolled in religion courses.
Three years ago, the country’s Taliban government banned girls from secondary schools and universities.
Now, the only way girls can continue some kind of education is through religious schools, known as madrassas.
The teachings focus on the Quran, and the prophet Muhammad.
Afghanistan is the only country in the world to bar girls from education beyond primary school.
Before the Taliban returned to power in 2021, Faiza had completed the 12th grade. Her goal was to become a doctor.
She is now one of about 400 students – about 90 percent of them girls or women taking courses at an Islamic studies center in Kabul.
She says religion is important to her and in her society.
