STORYLINE:
Evacuated residents from the Thailand-Cambodia border area where clashes have broken out took temporary shelter on Friday at a gymnasium in Surin.
Thai and Cambodian soldiers clashed along the border between their countries on Thursday in a major escalation that left at least 14 people dead, mostly civilians.
The two sides fired small arms, artillery and rockets, and Thailand also launched airstrikes.
Around 600 people have been relocated to the evacuation center in Surin.
Pornpan Sooksai said she was doing laundry right next to Ta Muen Thom temple when the clashes broke out.
"I just heard, boom, boom. We already prepared the (cats’) cages, clothes and everything, so we ran, carried our things to the car. I was frightened, scared."
Another evacuated local, Rattana Meeying, was shocked at the level of bloodshed in the armed clashes.
"It’s really bad, because I never thought we would lose the lives of our people," she said
"I’m upset. Children, old people, were hit all of a sudden, 11 of them. I’m very sad about that. I never imagined it would be this violent."
Fighting took place in at least six areas on Thursday, according to Thai Defense Ministry spokesperson Surasant Kongsiri, a day after a land mine explosion along the border wounded five Thai soldiers and led Bangkok to withdraw its ambassador from Cambodia and expel Cambodia’s envoy to Thailand.
On Friday, Cambodia’s chief official in Oddar Meanchey province, Gen. Khov Ly, said clashes resumed early in the morning near the ancient Ta Muen Thom temple.
Associated Press reporters near the border could hear sounds of artillery from early morning hours.
Thailand and Cambodia have blamed each other for the clashes, alleging that civilians were being targeted.
