"The United Nations and experts say that the Gaza Strip is facing famine and reports of deaths from malnutrition are rising inside Gaza. Israel says that hundreds of truckloads of aid are waiting on the border waiting on the UN to be brought in. But it’s not so easy the UN says, looting, dangerous roads and Israeli movement restrictions are all preventing them from being able to access the aid at the border and bring it into Gaza. Now to get the aid from the border the UN has to coordinate all its movements with the Israeli authorities because it involves moving through Israeli military-controlled zones. It says that out of 900 movement requests it submitted in May, June and July, more than half were denied or impeded by the Israeli military. It also says the military is funneling its convoys through roads that are unsuitable for trucks, that are marked with armed gangs where truck drivers are in danger. And it also says there are frequent delays, a round trip to the crossing to pick up the aid and back into Gaza can often take 20 hours. Israel says that since lifting a total blockade in May it’s allowed 4,500 trucks of aid into Gaza. That’s less than the several-hundred a day the UN says are necessary to enter and one of the lowest rates of aid entry in the entire war. Israel also says it’s facilitating airdrops where foreign countries can drop aid into Gaza, but aid groups are cautioning that that tactic is not safe and will not resolve the spiraling crisis."

STORYLINE:
The United Nations and experts say that Palestinians in Gaza are at risk of famine, with reports of increasing numbers of people dying from causes related to malnutrition.
Yet Israel says hundreds of truckloads of aid are waiting at the border for the U.N. to distribute in Gaza.
On Thursday, Israel’s military took journalists to the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing where hundreds of boxes of aid were on pallets filling a huge lot.
Israel says it has allowed in around 4,500 aid trucks since it lifted a total blockade in May —around 70 truckloads a day, one of the lowest rates of the war and far less than the several hundred the U.N. says are needed each day.
Israel says it lets in enough aid and faults U.N. agencies for not doing enough to retrieve and get it to those in need.
The U.N. says it is hampered by Israeli military restrictions on its movements and incidents of criminal looting.
To retrieve the aid at the border — or move around most of the Gaza Strip — U.N. trucks must enter zones controlled by the military after obtaining its permission. Once the aid is loaded, the trucks must get safely to the population.
The whole trip can take 20 hours, the U.N. says.
Large crowds of desperate people, as well as criminal gangs, overwhelm trucks as they enter and strip off the supplies.
