STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Black women marched Sunday along the Copacabana beachfront in Rio de Janeiro to denounce structural racism, demand justice, and call for reparations for Black people.

The group chanted slogans and danced while carrying banners that read “Fight like a Black mother” and “Black women in resistance.”

"The law says that racism is a crime, and this march today is of utmost importance for us to show our strength, our resilience,” said activist Mônica Santos, 53.

Signs also criticized right-wing leaders with messages like “Trump and Bolsonaro, enemies of Brazil.”

"As long as there is racism, there will be no democracy,” said Mônica Cunha, founder of the Moleque movement. “We continue to march, to fight for dignity, for a good life, and for reparations."

According to Brazil’s Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), Black women represent 66% of femicide victims in Brazil and face the greatest inequalities in income and access to rights.

The march was organized by the Rio de Janeiro State Forum of Black Women and serves as preparation for the national march that will take place in Brasília in November during the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
