STORYLINE:
Top trade officials from China and the United States arrived for talks in Stockholm on Monday over tariffs set by the Trump administration that sparked retaliation by Beijing.

Analysts say the two days of meetings led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are likely to lead to an extension of current tariff levels that are far lower than earlier this year at the peak of the trade standoff.

Instead, the two envoys are expected to help set the stage for a possible meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year.

The talks are the third this year between He and Bessent — nearly four months after Trump upset global trade with his sweeping tariff proposal, including an import tax that shot up to 145% on Chinese goods.

After talks in Geneva in May and London in June, the Stockholm meeting is set to extend a 90-day pause on those sky-high tariffs that have since been lowered to U.S. taxes of 30% on Chinese goods, and China responding with a 10% on U.S. products.

The U.S. seeks an agreement that would enable it to export more to China and shift the Chinese economy more toward domestic consumer spending.

China has said it’s seeking “more consensus and cooperation and less misperception” from the discussions.
The two sides could take up issues of China’s industrial overcapacity and its lack of control over chemicals used to make fentanyl.

Some analysts are on watch for how the two sides characterize the discussions and clues about a possible leaders’ summit because any real deal will hinge on the two presidents meeting each other, he said.
