“I thought the flood was really bad. I looked back to the yard. Nearly half of the seedling field was under water. The water was about to rush in, just this close. It was all water, front and back. I didn’t want to do anything. I just ran upstairs and waited for rescue. I remember thinking, if no one came to get us, we’d be in real trouble.”

STORYLINE:
Heavy flooding on the outskirts of China’s capital city of Beijing damaged roads and infrastructure, as local residents cleaned debris and assessed damage on Monday.
In Taishitun Town, about 100 kilometers from central Beijing, tree branches and debris were swept downstream of the Chao River.
Torrential rainfall from Sunday night into Monday morning uprooted trees and knocked down power poles.
“A storm like this only comes once in a century,” said Mr. Xia, a 59-year-old resident. “I’m nearly 60, and I’ve never seen rain like this in my life.”
Along the town’s main street, Zhuang Zhelin and his family were clearing mud from their building materials shop. In the backyard, their farmland was submerged. Muddy waterlines were clearly visible on stacked boxes inside the shop.
Zhuang recalled waking up to find floodwater already pouring in.
“The flood rushed in—so fast, so sudden,” he said. “We didn’t even have time to move things. We tried to lift what we could, but the water came in too quickly.”
Next door, Zhuang’s neighbor Wei Zhengming, a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, shoveled mud in his clinic.
As of Monday afternoon, petrol stations in the town were out of service due to power and internet outages. Trucks carrying rescue teams arrived to assist residents in clearing streets and draining waterlogged areas.
More rain is forecast for Monday night, and Beijing has raised its emergency flood response level citywide.
