STORYLINE:
The United States and the European Union agreed Sunday on a trade framework imposing a 15% tariff on most goods, avoiding for now much higher duties that could have shaken global markets.
Luxury goods will face the same 15% tariff, a setback for Europe’s high-end sector, including fashion and wine producers.
The announcement followed a meeting between President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Trump’s Turnberry golf course in Scotland, ending months of negotiations before a U.S. deadline to raise tariffs on EU member states.
Trump called the agreement “a good deal for everybody.”
Von der Leyen said it would bring “stability and predictability” for businesses on both sides of the Atlantic.
