STORYLINE:
Thailand’s acting prime minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, said that U.S. President Donald Trump called him to offer his congratulations following the ceasefire agreement he struck in Malaysia, earlier Monday, with Cambodian leader Hun Manet to halt five days of fighting with Cambodia along their mutual border.

The Malaysian meeting followed direct pressure from the president who had warned that the United States may not proceed with trade deals with either country if hostilities continue.

“President Trump from the US called me to congratulate and praise Thailand’s bravery in opening our minds and acting as an example to make peace between two countries and he praised our decision that will bring great benefit for both countries”, he told reporters after arriving back from Malaysia.

Phumtham thanked Trump for the part he played and said Trump told him that Monday’s successful outcome would be reflected in the results of efforts to negotiate a trade deal.

Thailand currently faces a tariff rate of 36%.

“After this, the tariff negotiations will start and we will see a benefit. What we get will be a great deal. He will do his best and give us as favorable terms as he can” he said.

The unconditional ceasefire takes effect at midnight Thai and Cambodian time, following fierce fighting that each blames the other for starting.

At least 35 people have been killed. Nationalist passions have been roused in both countries and there is a deep lack of trust. Phumtham told reporters that time will tell if it holds.

“It will be a good start at midnight. We have to understand that the situation is ongoing along the 800-kilometre border. So let’s wait and see tomorrow. Today we have told our position to the world. If Cambodia doesn’t do what it should do, it will look very bad before the international community. If so, the world will stand on our side,” he said.
