STORYLINE:
A newborn died Monday afternoon, hours after she was delivered in a surgery following the killing of her mother in Gaza Strip, a hospital said.
Soad al-Shaer, a seven-months pregnant woman, was one of 12 Palestinians who were killed in an Israeli overnight airstrike in the Muwasi area, east of Khan Younis, according to the Nasser Hospital.
The strike flattened a family house and destroyed several neighboring tents sheltering displaced people, including al-Shaer and her family, said her husband Ibrahim Qeishtah, who was injured along with their three other children.
The baby survived after a complex cesarean birth at the Muwasi field hospital, which is operated by the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The newborn girl, who was named Soad after her mother, was then taken to the Nasser hospital. There she fought for her life for several hours. She was breathing through a ventilator and was fed through tubes connected to her tiny body inside an incubator.
Dr. Ahmed al-Farah, head of the paediatric department at the Nasser Hospital, said the baby arrived suffering from birth asphyxia, which is also known as perinatal asphyxia – which means she didn’t receive enough oxygen and blood flow to the brain and other vital organs.
“She arrived in a very sensitive condition,” he said, adding that her death was “a tough example” that “death is not limited to people outside houses or inside their tents, but could get them inside their mothers’ wombs.”
