STORYLINE:
New York City is experiencing its second heat wave of the summer with temperatures feeling like they are in the triple digits.
New York City officials have activated the city’s Heat Emergency Plan.
City agencies and partners are working together to provide access to cooling centers, conducting outreach to at-risk people and working with utility providers to remind people to limit power use at home so they can maintain grid reliability.
The Parks department’s 52 public pools are staying open an extra hour in the evening while the extreme heat bakes the city.
"Make sure you stay hydrated, take frequent breaks, seek out shade," Mark Focht, New York City Parks acting first deputy commissioner, said.
"Wear light colored cotton clothing, you know, dress light, stay cool, stay shaded, stay hydrated."
Relief from the heat is expected to come by the end of the week as temperatures drop to highs in the 70s and 80s by Thursday and Friday.
The extreme heat was expected to set new records across Florida on Tuesday, with highs around 100 F. Heat index values in the Tampa Bay area were expected to range from 113 to 118 F (45 to 47.7 C).
