STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump says he’ll impose a 25% tariff on goods from India, plus an additional import tax because of India’s purchasing of Russian oil.
Trump said Wednesday that India “is our friend” but its “Tariffs are far too high” on U.S. goods.
Kevin Hassett, the director of the National Economic Council, was at the White House on Wednesday.
“India’s had a market that’s been pretty much close to American products, and we’ve been wide open to theirs. And I think President Trump is frustrated with the progress we’ve made with India, but feels that a 25 percent tariff will address and remedy the situation I n a way that’s good for the American people,” Hassett said.
As a result, Trump intends to charge an additional “penalty” starting Friday as part of the launch of his administration’s revised tariffs on multiple countries. The director general of the Federation of Indian Export Organisations says new tariffs could put India at a disadvantage relative to Vietnam, Bangladesh and China
