"Well, I had the idea to do a Robin Hood TV show which comes from being a fan of the period. Being a huge fan of all things medieval. I was a kind of castle nut growing up as a kid. I went to all the castles in England and Wales and I’ve always been very fascinated by the medieval period. I’ve made several other films in the medieval period and written many other scripts and stories. So Robin Hood was always there in my mind. You can’t do anything in the medieval period without being sort of two or three steps from Robin Hood."

"I mean, it’s a origin story. So you you get to learn about the the man before he became this sort of figure. But he’s a young Saxon man, from a family who loves him very much. And, yeah, he’s, you know, like, I think any young 24 year old, he’s trying to find his place in the world. But I think, yea, Rob’s, you know, he gets dealt some pretty tricky cards. So, you know, he has to navigate quite a bit. Yeah, yeah. But that’s that’s Rob. Yeah."

"In Hollywood terms, I mean, the scope and the scale of it, it’s pretty huge. I mean we’re in multiple locations, the sets we’re building are bigger than any sets that I’ve ever been a part of building. And I think it’s that large because we want to tell sort of a full story of Robin Hood. Really an origin story, you now? Like, how this man became this man? So we start in childhood with he and Marian and just go through basically his entire life."

STORYLINE:
Villages and castles from 12th-century England came to life in a small town in Serbia for the filming of a new series about Robin Hood that has just wrapped in the landlocked country in southeast Europe.
The 10-episode take on England’s beloved medieval outlaw who, in lore, stole from the rich to give to the poor, comes from Lionsgate Television, and is expected to premiere on MGM+ in the U.S. and parts of Europe later this year.
The Associated Press recently visited the set in Simanovci, the village which is home to a film studio and not far from the capital of Belgrade. Thorough research for the series was visible in the scenography and costumes, taking the cast — and the studio — back in time to the stony interiors of a candlelit castle, complete with stained-glass lancet windows.
The “sweeping, romantic adventure” offers a historically grounded look into how Robin Hood grew up to become an outlaw-turned-hero in the wake of the Norman conquest of England, the producers say.
McQueen said Marian’s character will be “quite empowering” for young women watching the series.
