“The experiment was initiated at the suggestion of Aosta Valley winemakers. The problem, in this case, is the Petit Rouge variety, a native variety, the most widely planted and most common here in the central valley. Like other less important native varieties, it suffers from sunburn in certain climatic conditions.”

“This variety (Petit Rouge) is a very difficult variety, a variety that produces very noble, very fine wines, but it has this cultivation problem. It suffers from sunburn, and that’s no small thing. Today, with these increases in temperatures due to climate change, this problem has worsened, and so we must first of all save the variety, because it’s very interesting and it belongs to us.”

“These are quite old, from June, which was a rather hot month this year, above the Aosta Valley standards. Here, however, we see more recent sunburns from last week, during which there were clear days, with high temperatures and significant UV rays.”

“The idea is to try to experiment with what the Institute (Agricole Regional) had already started some time ago, that is to use this substance called kaolin to verify if it is possible to reduce this problem of sunburn on the grapes.”

“Essentially, kaolin is a rock powder, it is mixed with simple water, it is a product that is also used in organic farming and is applied to the plants with the atomizer.”

“Basically, it (kaolin) has a very white, highly reflective colour, and when applied to the grape cluster, it has a reflective and protective effect. The same effect that sunscreen has on us humans.”
