"When he died in 1995, San Francisco and the world lost an icon. Jerry learned to play guitar right on this street. And if that didn’t happen, we wouldn’t have everything that is going on in our city today this weekend, but always. We wouldn’t have Jerry Day at McLaren Park. We wouldn’t have 150,000 attendees coming to Golden Gate Park this weekend. And I must say It’s going to generate not only financial benefit for the whole city, but it’s once again going to bring that joy and love and peace to our city."

And it’s truly an honor on behalf of Jerry Garcia’s family to be here today and witness this historical street naming. Thank you very much. I hope that you all get a chance to enjoy the music, dance, hug, smile, and cherish what’s valuable, what’s significant in life."

STORYLINE:
A small San Francisco street got a legendary new name as fans gathered to honor one of the city’s most iconic musicians.

Hundreds of fans in rainbow tie-dye and vintage band shirts gathered in San Francisco’s Excelsior neighborhood to celebrate what would have been Jerry Garcia’s 83rd birthday, and the renaming of tiny Harrington Street to “Jerry Garcia Street.”

Garcia, the late frontman of the Grateful Dead, grew up on the street, and learned to play guitar there.

His daughter, Trixie Garcia, addressed the crowd with a heartfelt message, urging fans to “cherish what’s valuable in life.”

The celebration comes as San Francisco marks the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary, with tens of thousands of fans in town for concerts and events.

Dead & Company, featuring original members Bob Weir and Mickey Hart, kicks off a three-night run at Golden Gate Park expected to draw more than 60,000 people each night.

It’s a celebration that’s sure to keep the Dead’s spirit alive.
