Southern Europe hit by wildfires and record temperatures | DW News

The intense wildfire near France’s border to Spain has already scorched 16,000 hectares, killing one and injuring 13. "Unfavorable weather conditions" will make the fire harder to control, a French official has said. French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou called the fire a "catastrophe of unprecedented scale," during a visit to the region earlier on Wednesday. This was the biggest area to be burnt in a single fire since 1949, he added. "What is happening today is linked to global warming and linked to drought," Bayrou said.
