STORYLINE:
Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar called on Hamas on Monday to immediately release Israeli hostages in Gaza, saying the world had downplayed their plight in the 22 months since they were taken from southern Israel.
“The horrible images of the hostages were painfully missing from the frontpages of the New York Times, the Washington Post and most of the global media. It is shameful! We call for the immediate and unconditional release of all the hostages,” Sa’ar told reporters.
The foreign minister’s remarks come amid an Israel-wide uproar over videos released last week showing frail hostages languishing in Gaza.
The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Sunday that they were appalled by the videos and demanded access to assess the hostages.
Sa’ar added, “innocent civilians are inhumanely used as tools by terrorists to achieve their goals. In the case of Hamas – to force upon us their conditions: Remaining in power in Gaza.”
Sa’ar also said that Israel is “doing a lot” to let humanitarian aid into Gaza, which experts warn faces a “worst case scenario of famine.”
Israel has faced widening international condemnation as it has continued to blockade the vast majority of aid from entering the Gaza Strip. Aid groups warn the amount of aid entering Gaza remains woefully insufficient.
The war was triggered by Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which left around 1,200 dead and saw 251 people taken hostage.
