"It was a mortar strike. Flashes, explosions — then I lost consciousness. I was in a coma for about a month. I woke up here in Kyiv, in the military hospital. I came to, but at first I didn’t even realize the condition I was in. They fitted me with both arms and legs — I was fully prosthetized in the U.S. I just don’t wear the right arm because I use my phone with that hand."

STORYLINE:
Mykola Shot is a Ukrainian soldier who lost all four limbs in a mortar explosion during the Russian-Ukrainian war.

He makes his way to his specially-modified car and climbs inside.

Shot starts the car and drives away, he has defied the odds by reclaiming his independence.

“Everyone said I’d never drive again. ‘How can you drive? You have no arms, no legs — how is that even possible?’ No. I will. I said I would, and that means I will," says Shot.

His car was expertly modified, but Shot wanted to add a personal touch of his own.

He wanted to show he has a disability but also that he is a veteran – then he found the perfect sticker online.

"Well, it definitely has to show that a person with a disability is driving," he says. "There has to be a sticker like that. And then I came up with an extra detail — I found it in an online store. So that it’s clear a veteran is behind the wheel," he says.

When people see him entering and leaving his car it certainly attracts attention, but Shot is immune to their comments and jokes.

"People see me arriving and locking the car. Then I hear things like, ‘Hey, Robocop!’ or ‘Look, it’s a cyborg.’ I’ve gotten used to it by now — I just don’t pay attention to any of that anymore," he says.

After undergoing prosthetic treatment in the U.S. and months of rehabilitation at Lviv’s Unbroken Rehabilitation Center, he now drives a specially adapted car and works at the same facility, dedicating himself to motivating fellow wounded soldiers.

It is the Unbroken Center that he is heading to today, for more rehabilitation sessions.

And judging by the way he can kick a football around, he’s made incredible progress.
