STORYLINE:
About 800 trucks carrying aid for Gaza have been sent to Israel for inspection after Israel eased its restrictions on aid delivery late last month, the Egyptian Red Crescent said on Wednesday.
Aid trucks on the Egyptian side of Rafah crossing are typically sent to the Israeli-controlled Kerem Shalom before the United Nations and aid groups collect and deliver the aid to Gaza.
Amal al-Imam, CEO of the Egyptian Red Crescent, said about 800 trucks were sent for inspection since July 27, out of 1,000 trucks that have been prepared to go to Gaza.
Retired Maj. Gen. Khaled Megawer, North Sinai governor, said efforts have been underway to send more aid to Gaza, in order to end the death of people from starvation.
βAll these young generations and trucks behind you and the evacuated trucks coming back from the Gaza Strip proves that we are still working very hard to send aid to the Gaza Strip,β he said.
Both al-Imam and Megawer spoke in a news conference outside the Egyptian gate of the Rafah crossing.
Trucks loaded with aid were returning after Israel allegedly rejected the shipment.
Other trucks carrying aid were seen waiting to head to Kerem Shalom crossing for inspection.
The Rafah crossing has been closed since Israel banned the entry of aid on March 1, and Israeli forces occupied the Palestinian side of the crossing later that month when it renewed its offensive, shuttering the ceasefire.
