8. SOUNDBITE (English) Eric Tucker, The Associated Press:
“There are new developments in the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case. Epstein’s former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell has said to her attorneys that she does not want the grand jury transcripts in the case to be released. She says the material amounts to hearsay and it’s not material that should be seen by the general public. Now this filing comes as judges are weighing a request by the Justice Department to make public the transcripts and the testimony from the Epstein and Maxwell investigations. As part of their effort to convince judges this material should be seen, the Justice Department has also tried to stress that a lot of what’s in there has actually already been seen by the general public, so they are trying to tamp down expectations about what might exist. But the mere request to unseal the transcripts is part of the Justice Department’s effort to appear transparent, and that’s important to the Trump administration as it faces a fierce backlash over an earlier refusal by the department to release a trove of records in their possession.”

STORYLINE:
Jeffrey Epstein’s ex-girlfriend wants to keep grand jury records secret in the sex trafficking case that sent her to prison.

Associated Press reporter Eric Tucker says Maxwell’s lawyers said so in a court filing Tuesday, writing that Maxwell hasn’t seen the material herself.

“She says the material amounts to hearsay and it’s not material that should be seen by the general public,” Tucker said.

The grand jury process is conducted behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, prosecutors are continuing to urge a court to release some of those records in the criminal case-turned-political fireball.

“The mere request to unseal the transcripts is part of the Justice Department’s effort to appear transparent, and that’s important to the Trump administration as it faces a fierce backlash over an earlier refusal by the department to release a trove of records in their possession,” Tucker said.
