2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Carol Alvarado, (D) Texas:
"Today I stand before you not just as a Texas lawmaker, but as an American with a warning. What is happening in Texas isn’t just a state injustice, it is a national alarm bell. Our state’s leadership is trying to redraw congressional lines in the middle of the decade with no new census, no new data, and no legitimate reason except to serve one man’s political ambition."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Borris Miles, (D) Texas:
"This mid-decade rigged districting, as I coined it, rigged districting is nothing more than a farce. It’s just another poll tax. All it is is another poll tax, another way to discriminate Black and brown from voting in the state of Texas. But I want you to understand something. It’s not just Texas. After Texas it will be your state. After your state it will be this entire country."

3. SOUNDBITE (English) Rep. Armando Walle, (D) Texas:
"We all know the criminality in the White House is running rampant. And what we’re trying to do is stop that criminality. Because these five seats in Texas, these particular five seats, four of them a majority of them are represented by Black and brown communities. OK? It’s no coincidence that when the governor picks up, when the president picks up the phone and calls Governor Abbott he moves, swiftly, and targeted these four to five majority minority seats."

STORYLINE:
Texas lawmakers spoke out in Boston Wednesday, decrying efforts to redraw congressional lines in their state.

The two most populous U.S. states — California and Texas — are grappling for political advantage ahead of the 2026 elections, setting up a national proxy war as Democrats and Republicans vie for control of Congress in the latter half of Donald Trump’s second presidency.

Texas Democrats on Tuesday again delayed their state’s House of Representatives from moving forward with a redrawn congressional map sought by Trump to shore up Republicans’ midterm prospects as his political standing falters. For a second day, Democrats forced a quick adjournment by denying the GOP majority the required attendance to take votes.

"This mid-decade rigged districting, as I coined it, rigged districting is nothing more than a farce. It’s just another poll tax. All it is is another poll tax, another way to discriminate Black and brown from voting in the state of Texas," said Sen. Borris Miles, (D) Texas.
