STORYLINE:
THE RESERVATION OF THE TURTLE MOUNTAIN BAND OF THE CHIPPEWA INDIANS IS BASED IN BELCOURT, NORTH DAKOTA, ABOUT 10 MILES FROM THE CANADIAN BORDER.
SOUNDBITE (English) Jamie Azure, Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians Chairman:
“If I had to describe the Turtle Mountain Tribe, I would say one big community, one big family.”
IN 2024 THE TURTLE MOUNTAIN BAND, ALONG WITH THE SPIRIT LAKE TRIBE, FORMED A JOINT STATE DISTRICT FOR THE FIRST TIME.
IT WAS THE RESULT OF A LAWSUIT FILED BY THE TRIBES ARGUING THAT THEY HAD NOT HAD THE FULL RIGHTS TO CHOOSE CANDIDATES BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE LINES WERE DRAWN.
A FEDERAL JUDGE AGREED AND PUT A NEW MAP IN PLACE.
SOUNDBITE (English) State Rep. Jayme Davis, (D) North Dakota:
“I think our values, being in those rooms, at those tables, has had a huge impact.”
NOW THE FUTURE OF THE DISTRICT IS IN THE HANDS OF THE U.S. SUPREME COURT AFTER AN APPEALS COURT OVERTURNED THAT DECISION.
THE U.S. SUPREME COURT HAS STAYED THAT RULING, PUTTING ON HOLD THE APPEALS COURT DECISION, WHILE IT DECIDES WHETHER IT WILL TAKE THE CASE.
BUT THERE ARE WIDE IMPLICATIONS, BECAUSE THE QUESTION IS WHETHER INDIVIDUAL ENTITIES, LIKE THE TRIBES OR THE NAACP OR THE ACLU CAN BRING SUCH CHALLENGES.
SOUNDBITE (English) State Rep. Jayme Davis, (D) North Dakota:
“If it, you know, passes, as we hope it will, it’s going to impact every single person, native or not. And so if you take the politics away, you take race away, you take all of that away, what’s left is the impact that we as individuals get to hold our government accountable.”
