STORYLINE:
When Lin-Manuel Miranda finally walked on stage following the tenth anniversary performance of “Hamilton,” he did what he does best. Instead of making a speech like the others that preceded him, he launched into “The Story of Tonight” with a stage filled with almost every cast and creative ever associated with the show.
The large ensemble performance included snippets from other showstoppers, like the line “Immigrants, we get the job done” from “Yorktown (The World Turned Upside Down),” which drew rousing applause. It all ended with the high-energy chorus from “My Shot.”
After the performance, the invite-only audience enjoyed a block party outside the theater, complete with classic New York staples like hot dogs and pretzels. Meanwhile, hundreds of fans lined the streets behind barricades as Lin-Manuel Miranda came outside to greet the crowd at the stage door, sidewalk, and from atop the marquee.
Original cast member Ariana DeBose beamed with excitement, soaking in the cheers and love from fans as she walked out of the theater.
“Look around how lucky we are to be alive right now. We are in the greatest city in the world. I love the show,” DeBose told The Associated Press.
The Oscar-winning actor reflected on the show’s significance in today’s politically charged climate.
“Its messaging is palpable. I don’t think there’s a person in the United States living through these times who will not receive one or many of its very important stories and values. Like, I think it should be required viewing, in my opinion,” DeBose said.
“Hamilton” is now the 16th longest running show in Broadway history.
