"Justice has prevailed today. The Palestinian right have prevailed. Umm al-Khair has prevailed. Our patience and steadfastness have triumphed as well as our defiance of the harsh Israeli conditions imposed on us and related to the handover of the body because this is a human right — the natural right of the martyr or the deceased to be buried."

"It is fitting for Awdah to get a funeral like this one, to be honoured like this. And we thank God, we broke the occupation’s decisions to either bury him at night with only 15 people or to bury him in the city of Hebron or the city of Yatta. Awdah Al Hathaleen, the martyr Awdah Al Hathaleen, will be buried in Umm al-Khair. And, God willing, Umm al-Khair will remain steadfast."

STORYLINE:
Mourners on Thursday were finally able to bid farewell to a Palestinian activist whose body had been held by Israel following his killing last month.

Witnesses said Awdah Al Hathaleen was shot and killed by a radical Israeli settler during a confrontation caught on video on July 28th.

Israeli authorities initially said they would only return the body if the family agrees to certain conditions that would "prevent public disorder.”

Despite dropping some of their demands, family members said Israel set up checkpoints and prevented many mourners from outside the village from attending.

On Thursday, the body was returned after female Bedouin relatives launched a hunger strike to protest the authority’s decision to hold it in custody.

The hunger strike was a rare public call from Bedouin women who traditionally mourn in private.

Mourners carried the body of Al Hathaleen through Umm al-Khair before holding funeral prayers for him.

"It is fitting for Awdah to get a funeral like this one, to be honoured like this. And we thank God, we broke the occupation’s decisions to either bury him at night with only 15 people or to bury him in the city of Hebron or the city of Yatta," said Azeez Al Hathaleen, Awdah’s brother.

A video of the confrontation shot by a Palestinian witness shows Israeli settler Yinon Levi brandishing a pistol and tussling with a group of unarmed Palestinians.

He can be seen firing two shots, but the video does not show where the bullets hit.

Witnesses said one of the shots killed Al Hathaleen, an English teacher and father of three, who was uninvolved and was standing nearby.

The confrontation occurred in the village of Umm al-Khair, in an area of the West Bank featured in “No Other Land,” an Oscar-winning documentary about settler violence and life under Israeli military rule.
