STORYLINE:
Taiwan’s stock market index surged on Thursday following U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff announcement.
The momentum was triggered by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) stock price surge after Trump’s declaration of the semiconductor’s 100% tariffs exemption.
Tariffs will not apply to companies that are manufacturing in the U.S. or have committed to do so.
The move is part of Trump’s efforts to bring manufacturing back to the United States.
TSMC’s stock price surged 55 points from 1,125 to 1,180 points, fluctuating in the early trading hours of Taiwan Stock Exchange.
The announcement was made early morning in Taiwan, before the opening of the local stock market, and was well-received by stock traders.
Asian shares mostly advanced and financial markets appeared to show scant if any reaction to higher tariffs on exports to the United States that took effect early Thursday.
