STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump’s new tariff rates on U.S. imports from dozens of countries took effect Thursday – the latest chapter in the saga of Trump’s reshaping of global trade.
The Philippines, a longtime treaty ally of the United States, received a 19% tariff from the Trump administration.
The latest figure is a slight increase from the 17% tariff that was announced by the Trump administration in April.
Key Philippine exports to the U.S. include electronic products, including semiconductors, automobile parts, textiles and garments, wheat and animal feeds, coconut oil.
The Philippine government’s reaction to Trump’s tariffs has been relatively tame.
The Philippines and the U.S. are strengthening defense cooperation and large-scale combat exercises in northern and western Philippine coastal provinces.
